Press Release from the Swedish Sailing Federation
During November, two gatherings were held: a national meeting for young female coaches and a networking event for female officials. Together, they brought nearly 50 women aged between 15 and 73. These gatherings mark the starting point of a long-term initiative with a clear goal: more women in leadership roles within Swedish sailing.
“We want to create more female role models, build a sense of community, and contribute to a more gender-equal future for Swedish sailing,” says Marie Björling Duell, Secretary General and Director of Sport at the Swedish Sailing Federation.

The coaches’ gathering was held at Marstrands Havshotell on 15-16 November in collaboration with the sailing team WINGS, which alongside its elite campaign has long worked to improve the environment for young female athletes. Participants engaged in lectures, workshops, and conversations about the coaching role, psychological safety, and creating healthy, supportive environments for young sailors to grow. Speakers included national team coach Alberte Dahlberg, Head of Elite at KSSS Cissi Jonsson, and Linda Hammarstrand, who highlighted the power of collaboration, culture, and communication.
“It was fantastic and incredibly valuable to bring so many young female coaches together in one place and allow them to share experiences, challenges, and future plans. These women represent the next generation of leaders in Swedish sailing,” says Anna Östling from WINGS Sailing.

In conjunction with the coaches’ gathering, a meeting was also held for the network of licensed female officials, including race officers, sailing officials, and judges at various levels within the sport. The aim was to get to know other female officials, explore opportunities to grow in their roles, and be inspired to take on new assignments within sailing. The gathering combined presentations, workshops, and experience sharing.
Christina “Tina” Örtendahl, an international judge with assignments at multiple Olympic Games; Kristina Wiktander Broman, race officer for international championships; and Lina Rybeck, one of the few young female measurers, shared their experiences from different perspectives within officiating.
The Swedish Sailing Federation sees this initiative as an important step toward a more gender-equal community of coaches and officials.
“Everyone is needed. An inclusive environment and more female role models create better conditions for our athletes and make sailing more enjoyable for everyone,” says Theres Wolgast, Development Manager at the Swedish Sailing Federation.
The network for female leaders and officials will continue with digital meetings throughout the winter season and will meet in person on an annual basis.
