The Royal London Yacht Clubโs Etchells Youth Academy has become one of the UKโs most credible transition programmes for sailors aged 18 to 29. Its purpose is simple and demanding: give talented sailors real responsibility in a strict one-design keelboat class, and prepare them for the realities of top-level racing. Since its launch in 2010, the Academy has supported more than 750 sailors, many of whom have progressed into the Americaโs Cup ecosystem, round-the-world campaigns, elite one-design circuits, and championship-winning crews. Just as importantly, a strong number have stayed within the Etchells class, building long-term campaigns and strengthening the fleet from within.
Training that mirrors the real game
Before selection, prospective teams take part in a structured winter programme of four training weekends in Cowes, led by professional Etchells sailors. These weekends are designed to accelerate learning, sharpen communication, and expose teams to the standards required to perform. Each Saturday concludes with a compulsory debrief and evening session at the Royal London Yacht Club, where on-the-water lessons are challenged, discussed, and grounded. The programme welcomes both youth teams and other Etchells sailors, including owners, creating an environment where learning flows across experience levels without lowering expectations.

Commitment, criteria, and opportunity
Applications are submitted as teams of three or four sailors, with a combined weight limit of 285kg and a nominated team leader responsible for coordination. Each sailor provides a sailing CV, and teams are selected following formal trials at the end of March. Successful crews are granted use of an Etchells for the full 2026 Cowes racing season, with the expectation that they commit fully to the class calendar. International exchange opportunities with overseas Etchells fleets, including major events abroad, further extend the Academy beyond local waters and into the global sailing arena.
Application Closing Date
The Etchells Youth Academy is not about potential alone. It is about preparation, accountability, and the willingness to show up fully. If you and your teammates are ready to race hard, learn fast, and earn your place on the start line, now is the moment to act. Applications close on 24 December 2025.
